Re-purposing Products for Sustainable Landscape Construction Projects
Re-purposing Earth Material/Products for Multiple Sustainable Landscape Construction Projects in Briarcliff, N.Y.
We had the good fortune to work on three design/build landscapes in Scarsdale, NY simultaneously. We coordinated the reuse of fill excavated from one of our ‘up county’ projects (ongoing) in Bedford, NY (retaining walls, driveway, drainage and site development) to use to build an elevated access road to remove a huge tree stump which came down in Hurricane Irene and install storm chambers, drainage, retaining walls, plants, etc. to restore our previously exquisite landscape featuring a stream, waterfall, Japanese Zen/rock garden and planting. The fill/access road was then moved approximately 1 1⁄2 mile to be used/re-purposed for substantial regrading and contouring/retaining for installing a beautiful and unique natural flagstone patio, wood deck and redirected stairs, stone walkways, stepping stone paths, boulders for landscape effect/accent, new lawn and plantings.
While this was going on, we were planting and removing stone from another site/client project, two streets/blocks away to regrade and install a lawn and remove a retaining wall. This stone was used to construct and install a sub-grade retaining feature (example of new bio engineering techniques) on the other project. The savings of resources realized (labor, material, etc.) was substantial and conforms to the SSI benchmarks and guidelines accordingly.
In addition, new products and technologies were employed with the help and support from suppliers, vendors and manufacturers such as: NDS Easy Flow, Penn mulch erosion control and bio-engineering. All these projects required permits (Registered Landscape Architect stamp) through the municipalities including:
- City of Yonkers Building Department (drainage)
- Village of Scarsdale Planning & Zoning (Wetlands & Stormwater)
- Town of Greenburg Engineering Planning & Zoning and State DEC Stormwater.
All three are models of Landscape Architecture, Construction & Efficiency meeting our rigorous high standards for ecologically, sustainable construction & business practices. Why would you hire anyone else when you could have us? Walk with Beauty!
